Segments Guide

Segments enable you to organize or group your contacts by common characteristics. 

Examples include: people in a 30-day trial who have not completed a purchase or customers whose membership expires next month. Please see our article Use audience segmentation to generate leads for more examples.  

There are multiple types of segments in DailyStory. The two most common types are:

  1. Static Segments: you manually add and remove contacts.
  2. Dynamic Segments: you set the search criteria and they system automatically adds and removes contacts.

There are a few specialized segments, such as import and loyalty. These are segments created automatically when using DailyStory.

Why create segments?

  1. Segments help you categorize and target specific customers.
  2. Segments are used to tell a campaign what contacts in the system should be included.
  3. When you schedule an email or text message, you have to select the segment you are sending to.

Below are some frequently asked questions about Segments.

How often are dynamic segments updated?

Dynamic segments are updated and rebuilt—where contacts are added or removed—every 24 hours, at 2 A.M. based on the time zone or location set in your DailyStory account.

Why do some contacts not show up in my segment?

Contacts may not show up in your segment for several reasons.

How do I remove contacts from a Dynamic segment?

Contacts cannot be manually removed from a dynamic segment. The only way to remove contacts from a dynamic segment is to update the search criteria to be more specific, effectively excluding contacts that don’t meet the specific criteria.

How do I send an email to a specific segment?

To send an email to a specific segment, edit the email in the campaign, and then use the scheduler. The scheduler provides the option of selecting specific segments as the asset’s recipients. 

What happens when I disable a segment?

When a segment is disabled, its status becomes “paused” and is moved to the Paused Segments bin. If the disabled segment is a dynamic segment, it automatically stops updating itself unless it is re-enabled.

Can I copy segments?

 Yes, but the copy option is only available for Dynamic segments. Manually created segments or special system segments cannot be copied.

Why can't I find an old segment?

If a segment remains inactive for over 90 days, the system will automatically archive it. You can find archived segments in the Archive bin. Open the main Segments hamburger menu, and then select Archive.

How do I find disabled or archived segments?

You can find disabled or archived segments using the filtering options when viewing the list of all segments.
